The Lions Den 2017

Teams of students have again entered the Lion’s Den to raise funds for their chosen charities.

Our Club developed the Lions Den specifically for use with Schools inspired by the BBC programme ‘Dragons Den’. It is designed to encourage Students to form teams and use their academic skills to prepare presentations in a bid to better others and provides a public platform where the merits of each presentation can be considered. In so doing, the Students become more aware of the needs of their local community and the importance of volunteering to society as a whole.

Its initial introduction at Ringwood School in 2011 was a resounding success exceeding the expectations of both the School and the Club. In 2012 the Lions Den hosted by Ringwood School was opened to presentations from both the Ringwood School and The Burgate School that has introduced a spirit of friendly rivalry between the Schools. This is the fifth year that students from both schools have been in contest with each other to win up to £1600.

The event took place at Ringwood School on Wednesday 22nd  March 2017. Each of the two schools entered four teams and were given a maximum of ten minutes to make their presentations.

Every member of the team had to speak in front of the audience and be judged by  Retired Bank Manager Mr. Arthur Poulton, Deputy Mayor of Fordingbridge Town Councillor Paul Ansty and Lion Yorky Tuke President of Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club.

All of the presentation made were of a very high standard and had been researched well. Some of the teams had recorded their own video interviews. This showed a great deal of initiative and all showed excellent presentation skills. All of the students involved in the presentations will have personally gained a lot of experience that will no doubt help them in future years. The others who will benefit from the monies awarded will be the countless number of people who rely on the help from the organisations represented.

Ringwood and Fordingbridge Lions Club would like to thank all the students who took part and also Ringwood School and Burgate School for supporting and encouraging these young people.

Hampshire Students dare to enter Lions Den

Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club are always on the lookout for local needs to address and despite having made charitable donations in excess of £12,000.00 already this year, donated a further £1600.00 for this year's Lions Den Competition.  Based loosely on the program "Dragons Den" this is a local annual inter school competition where students from Ringwood School and Burgate School put forward their ideas about how charitable funds should best benefit their local community.

On Monday 2 December 2013, 4 teams of students from Ringwood School and 4 teams of students from Burgate School in Fordingbridge bravely presented their bid for a share of the money before an audience of staff, parents, pupils, and a panel of judges comprising the Mayor of Fordingbridge, Cllr Malcolm Connolly, the Deputy Mayor of Ringwood, Cllr Barbara Woodiford, and the President of Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions, Stephen Sherring.  All 34 students played an integral part in the presentations showing great ingenuity and skill to make their bid for the money as compelling and professional as possible.  They are pictured above with the judges.

Lion President Stephen Sherring commented "What makes this competition so great is that students from both schools take a long hard look at the competing needs going on in their own local community, develop a passion for the work of local charities, and get the chance to hone their presentation skills ready for the next step in their career".  Many of the students were so moved by work being done in their local community that many will continue to donate their own time and energy to help with their chosen cause well into 2014

Solent Mind, Ringwood Foodbank, Rose Grace Trust,  Honeypot Children's Charity, The Lantern Community, Stars Appeal, Liberty's Owl and Raptor Centre, 1st Poulner Scout Group Multi Activities Centre

Jake Adams, Molly Fairhead-Parsons, Mae Hutchins, Charlotte Christopher, Ellie Bowen, Ailsa Poulter, Josgua Wale, and Libbie Dunn from Ringwood School impressed the judges the most with their presentation to raise funds for Ringwood Foodbank.  The students even filmed their own video with volunteers at the Salisbury based foodbank, The Trussell Trust, to make their argument even more compelling.  .

"All of us who took part enjoyed having the opportunity to speak to an audience about charitable organisations that are close to us both individually, and collectively as a school

Burgate Headteacher David Pover said: "I was especially proud of our pupils; they were passionate, knowledgeable and convincing about the charities they were pitching on behalf of."

The Lions Den event is firmly entrenched in the academic year at both schools and is a fantastic opportunity for every club to raise their own awareness in the community and at the same time help those in need.  The project not only benefits local charities but each of the participating students who develop not only their own self confidence, maturity, and public speaking skills, but gain a greater awareness of their local community and of course Lions Clubs International.  Should anyone require any further information about Lions Den in Schools please contact Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club for more detail
